How I Work: Matt Clunan, VP of Global Brand Marketing, Fiverr

Matt Clunan’s inner-child never went anywhere. Design by Barbara Cadorna.

To experience and revolutionize a changing world, you have to first keep up with it. AI is taking over, as they say, but the human factor isn’t disintegrating into thin air, is it?

Recently, Matt Clunan, Fiverr VP Global Brand Marketing, and team launched “Power of Humanity,” a campaign celebrating a world where human ingenuity and AI technology work in harmony. Yes, AI might be able to drive soon and edit your writing better than you, but it will never compete with your human touch or insights, Fiverr argues. (And as creatives who champion bold ideas, we agree.)

Here, Clunan shares how he works as a new dad with new responsibility, including his newfound interests in cycling and DIY home-improvement projects; why he likes to split his time between the city and Upstate; and how his annoyingly curious inner-child never went anywhere.

Clunan is a new dad, so his mornings are baby-focused. Images c/o Clunan.

Rise and Shine

I’m a new dad, so the mornings revolve around the baby! 5 a.m.-ish wake ups. Coffee, check emails. Get the baby up, playtime, cook breakfast. Attempting to get into cycling, so a few morning rides (indoors or on a trainer) are in the plans.

Work Uniform

White T-shirt from Uniqlo as they fit well and are cheap to replace as soon as they start fading. APC jeans, which get more and more comfortable the more I wear them and the less I wash them. Nike sneakers. Same thing every single day.

How I Structure My Day

I work from NY, and with Fiverr Headquarters in Tel Aviv, my mornings are frontloaded with meetings. Then, I focus on cross-team projects, planning meetings, etc. My afternoons are spent meeting with my team in NY and catching up on my inbox, Slack, etc., using the afternoons to think.

Playlist Favorites

Anything, nothing. I'm not much of a music fan, which freaks people out.

Tools of the Trade

I’m a big fan of the basics, being Google products - Gmail, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Docs. Slack is my go-to for remote communication, but I also use task organizers like Monday.com to stay on top of larger projects. At the end of the day, I always prefer to handwrite any notes with a pen and notepad.

Dream Studio

A big desk, lots of natural light, someplace quiet and distraction-free.

Splitting time between New York City and upstate NY provides a good balance for me. I prefer a few days in the office and a few days working from home to get a mix of both.

One Unique Thing About My Work Process…

I like to keep my inbox as empty as possible. Snoozing emails to a later time or date if they’re not urgent and keeping only the most pressing things in front of me.

Mantra

Stay curious.

I was an annoyingly curious child and kind of still am today. Continuing to ask questions and keep learning. Putting myself in uncomfortable and unknown situations is when I’ve grown the most.

My Brightest Idea that Never Saw the Light of Day

Struggling to come up with an answer for this one makes me think that all of these bright ideas I had might not really have been all that bright. I’m confident an unforgettable idea will materialize into something great someday.

To-Do List Item that Keeps Me Up at Night

An endless list of home improvement projects. Renovating an old 1700s home, while studying DIY YouTube videos on tackling projects I probably shouldn’t be doing.
